It was 1927, and Avonne had just signed with M-G-M Studios, I’m sure the folks in publicity pulled the ol’, “send the new gal over to Gay’s for the lion hug.” They would have been referring to Gay’s Lion Farm, the same farm that happened to house “Jackie,” one of their most famous stars. Yup, the same fella you see roar in the lion logo before all your favorite M-G-M pictures. That’s not “Jackie” with Avonne in the press clipping, but she sure would’ve looked great in a pith helmet and jodhpurs — “Back Jackie!, Back…!”

Upon Ziegfeld Girl Avonne Taylor’s death in 1992, the drawings that make up The Taylor-Morse Collection were discovered among personal scrapbooks packed away in a Palm Springs, California storage facility. Taylor’s family uncovered an intimate series of 80 drawings by famed Tijuana Bible and Bazooka Joe cartoonist Wesley Morse done specifically of, and for, Taylor, in 1922-23, each on his personal stationery. These images had remained unseen for 70 years.
